Visitors to the market square know they have arrived at Oulu’s living room when they see the impressive landmarks of Torinranta: the market hall, the old storehouses, and the Toripolliisi statue guarding the square.
During the summer, Torinranta buzzes with both tourists and locals, along with early-morning vegetable vendors and food sellers serving customers late into the evening. In the colorful old storehouses, you can find charming restaurants and cafés year-round, as well as small and unique shops selling handicrafts, clothing, and interior décor.
At the front of the 120-year-old Market Hall, Oulu’s beloved Toripolliisi statue stands watch, reminding visitors of a time when real market policemen maintained order in the square. It is known that in the 18th century, this lively hub of harbor and export activity eventually quieted down, transforming into a popular meeting place for townspeople and visitors from surrounding regions. Market policemen were once essential for overseeing public order and discipline.
