Inner Courtyard
Inner Courtyard
The inner courtyard was used by the whole castle community. The inner courtyard was a bright place for everyday activities and provided access to the ground floor rooms. Originally there were no doorways on the front facade of the Castle to ensure its defence. The entrance to the castle on the second floor was via a ladder.
The second floor of the castle was reserved for the castellan and his entourage. It is for this reason that the most impressive brickwork in the courtyard is on the second floor of the castle. The decoration is unique in Finland. The decorative motifs on the north-eastern wall are inspired by the Gothic style known in northern Germany. The brick masters were either for the decorative decoration were either from northern Germany profession there.
