Oulu used to be a notable seafaring town in the 19th century. A significant number of the residents in those days were sailors by occupation. The sailors’ families lived in small wooden houses on the outskirts of town, just like the Matila house, nowadays known as the Sailor’s Home Museum. The house is the oldest preserved wooden house in Oulu, dating back to 1739. It was moved to Pikisaari island in 1983.
