You might remember the tournaments of Dames and Knights. Many movies have shown knights dueling with lances, charging at each other on galloping horses. What you see here are the broken pieces of a tournament lance. Clearly, it didn’t end well for this lance. This gives you an idea of how dangerous the game was. Look at the thickness of the wood—breaking a lance like this would have taken a tremendous impact. We don't know what happened to the knight, but we hope his outcome was happier than that of his lance.
