White Penitents
White Penitents
Here we are with the "White Flagellants" painting. Those figures in the foreground, looking like little ghosts, are actually the White Flagellants. But what were the Flagellants? They were medieval congregations of devout believers who dressed in these ghost-like robes. Initially, they even practiced self-flagellation out of devotion, though fortunately this practice faded quickly. However, the use of their distinctive costumes continued for many centuries, well into the last century. The rest of the painting depicts the churches in Monticello, particularly in the Villa area where the castle is located. On the right, we see Saint Bernardino with the coin that symbolizes him in religious paintings. In the center, there’s the Madonna, seemingly protecting everyone, and on the left, Saint Bernardino, another church in the Villa fraction. This painting is from the late 17th century and is likely the work of a local artist. It may not be a refined piece, but it is very expressive with vibrant colors.
