The table clock on Alfred’s desk and was made by the British company Barraud & Lund in the late 19th century. Inside the clock is an engraved mark that reads "J.F Paris E.G.L." The clock, also referred to as a travel clock, may have accompanied Alfred on his many trips across Europe. The clock’s casing is covered with a brown, reddish-speckled material that imitates tortoiseshell but is likely made from celluloid, an early form of plastic.
