The statue of Alexander I was erected in 1909 to celebrate the centenary of the Diet of Porvoo. The statue was originally placed by the column where the Czar’s throne stood. During the Diet of 1809, the Czar declared Finland “a nation among nations”. This marked the beginning of Finland’s move toward independence. The statue was sculpted by Walter Runeberg.
