The Christmas tree was traditionally decorated with candles and edible decorations such as apples, raisins, nuts, caramels and confectionery. Purchased Christmas decorations were sought after and sold in Turku already in the 1860s. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became increasingly common for paper merchants to sell a wide selection of decorations such as Christmas tree lights, ornaments and flags. Marzipan sweets and other edibles were hung in the Jacobsson family's Christmas tree. On Christmas day, the children raided the Christmas tree, and all the goodies were eaten. Afterwards, the Christmas tree was decorated again with traditional ornaments.
