At the edge of Hamina's market square stands a flag tower built in 1790 as part of the fortress.
The flag tower was originally constructed as the flag tower for the commander of Hamina Fortress, part of the Helsinki Bastion. A large flag flew from the tower when the fortress commander was present. The flag tower served this purpose until the fortress was decommissioned in 1836. The Helsinki Bastion was demolished in 1889, leaving only the flag tower. The tower is also called the Peace Tower.
In 2017, flags from the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as the flags of self-governing territories, were raised in the park surrounding the flag tower. The Sámi flag was also hoisted.
In 2021, Hamina began raising flags in the tower in honor of various international flag days. The flag rotation includes 24 different flag days each year, recognizing various groups and organizations. Additionally, Hamina flies the flag every year on the city's founding day, March 30.
