At the highest point of Myllyharju, on Kukkukivi, stands an Art Nouveau-style observation tower designed by architect K. Hjelt in 1906. It is considered one of the most beautiful observation towers in the country.
In the 1880s, Myllyharju’s promenades ended near the old cemetery. Beyond that, only agile climbers could navigate the piles of stones. With financial support from Consul Alfred Björksten, walking paths were created through the ridge, and existing trails were widened. On the southern side, an old wooden pavilion from 1886 was replaced in 1906 with a three-story cast-iron observation tower, also designed by Hjelt.
The tower’s upper platform stands 49 meters above sea level. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the Svartholm sea fortress.
Kukkukivi was also home to one of the measurement points of the Struve Geodetic Arc, known as Loviisa.
