Barracks area consists of open lawn areas, tree and shrub plantings, and pathways. At the heart of the park stands the Church of St. Nicholas, belonging to Vaasa’s Orthodox Parish. Designed by Carl Axel Setterberg, the church dates back to 1862.
Along the Korsholmanpuistikko side of the park, several memorials can be found: the Lotta Svärd statue from 2005, the Jäger Battalion memorial stone from 1964, and three separate walls with commemorative plaques honoring military units that have been stationed in Vaasa. The Heritage Wall presents both wartime and peacetime military units and divisions that were either founded in or operated in Vaasa. This wall was designed by architect Annikki Nurminen. The Lotta Svärd statue, created by sculptor Tea Helenelund, commemorates the women’s auxiliary organization. Helenelund herself served as a radio operator in the Lotta Svärd organization.
On either side of the Heritage Wall, there are four field cannons (model 1873), donated to the City of Vaasa. These cannons were part of the war trophies from 1918.
The park also features a play area for children.
Please note that no winter maintenance is provided in this park.
