This Empire-style wooden building, originally constructed in 1841, was remodeled in 1890 into a revivalist-style structure. It has served both as a residential and commercial building. The current form of the house dates to 2007. Remnants of the past can still be seen in its solid stone foundation and corner pilasters.
The house was owned by Postmaster Lindeman from the 1850s onward, and from 1905, by Matti Toivonen, the magistrate’s janitor. Over the years, tenants from many walks of life have lived in the house—including a master of arts, female doctor, captain, heiress, laundress, apprentice, and tailor families.
Since the 1950s, the house has hosted several cafés and bars, including Kahvila Pirkka, Kahvila Siimes, Markku’s Bar, Maaret’s Bar, and most recently, Café Katariina.
