Oulujoki Church

Oulujoki Church
Oulujoki Church is the only surviving wooden Art Nouveau church in Northern Finland. The church was completed in 1908 and designed by the county architect Viktor J. Sucksdorff in the National Romantic style, which also shows Karelian influences. The church's impressive bell tower and soaring roof reflect the ideals of the time and the spirit of an independent Finland.
The church has been repaired several times over the years, but an extensive restoration in 1983-84 under the direction of architect Anna-Maija Ylimaula returned the building to its original appearance. The church's interior, especially the altar and the choir stalls, represent the idea of a total art nouveau work of art. The church textiles were also designed to be stylistically consistent during the restoration.
