Food Storehouse "Särinaitta"
This building was used for storing food supplies. The length of storage depended on how the ingredients were treated. Methods included smoking and drying. Fresh meat and fish could be preserved long-term in sealed containers immersed in a strong brine solution. Other foodstuffs, such as potatoes, root vegetables, and mashed products made from sour berries, were stored in earth pits and cellars. Berries from the forests have always been an important source of vitamins.
In ancient times, people’s livelihood depended solely on nature. Food was obtained from forests and waters. Slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting, fishing, and livestock farming produced the food, whose acquisition and preservation were extremely important and required skill. Everything possible was used to avoid waste. Despite this, poor harvest years sometimes caused periods of hardship.
This building originates from the “Eerola” farm in the southeastern part of Konnevesi. It was moved there in 1777 from the “Pynnölä” farm in the village of “Siikakoski” as part of the division of farms during inheritance distribution. The “Pynnölä” farm is one of the earliest permanently inhabited places near Siikakoski.
