THE OLD COPPER PLANT

The copper factory, in operation 1913–1929, was Outokumpu’s first industrial ore refinery. The crushed ore was roasted (i.e., heated in a furnace) and then disolved in sulphuric acid. In the electrolysis department, the copper was separated from the solution by means of electric current. The refined copper was then cast into ingots.
