The painting depicts the drawing room of the museum Ett Hem. In the background, doorways open into Mrs Jacobsson’s room and the bedroom, creating a layered view of the museum’s interior spaces. In the foreground, a woman dressed in a pale green taffeta gown stands by the window, gazing outside. The title Pale Green Taffeta refers to the fabric of her dress.
Behind her, in Mrs Jacobsson’s room, stands a maid, and further back, in the next room, another servant is faintly visible. The placement of the figures introduces a narrative tension within the scene.
The work conveys a nostalgic atmosphere experienced by the artist – inspired by the museum’s interiors and its dramatized tours, which bring the museum’s history to life.
The artwork is owned by Saastamoinen Foundation at EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art.
