A few steps from the historic center of Izamal, on 26th Street, is the imposing pyramid of Itzamatul, the second largest in the city, after Kinich Kakmó. This pre-Hispanic structure is composed of three construction stages, partially covered by vegetation. The first stage, built between 400 and 600 A.D., presents a stepped foundation with sloping walls. In the second stage, rounded corners and vertical walls were incorporated. From the third stage -which dates from 950 to 1150 A.D.- a large base of more than 100 meters per side and a lateral stairway are preserved. According to tradition, the pyramid was an important pilgrimage center. Devotees from distant regions came to request favors to the god Zamná, considered the supreme sage of the Itzaes and master of sciences and arts. Access is free and it is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm.
