Lat. Agave

The agave originates from South America but was brought to Europe as early as the 16th century. It is a succulent plant with grey-green leaves that can grow up to two metres long in the wild. Today, agave grows wild especially in the Mediterranean region, where it often forms dense clusters along roadsides. In Finland, the plant thrives outdoors during the summer but must be overwintered indoors in a cool environment. It is typically repotted every three to four years. The agave at the museum is a cutting from Kankas Manor, where the original plant was purchased in 1905.
