The Dutchman's pipe cactus
Lat. Epiphyllum oxypetalum
The Dutchman's pipe cactus, or princess of the night, at the museum comes from the Runeberg Museum in Porvoo and originally belonged to Fredrika Runeberg’s personal plant collection. The cactus produces wonderfully fragrant flowers, but it blooms only for a brief two-week period—and only during the dark hours of the night. It is said that Runeberg himself once invited the neighbours over at night to admire its rare bloom. The plant originates from Mexico.
