Located west of the old main square of Izamal, near where the Municipal Palace is today, the Kabul structure is a Mayan vestige of great symbolic value. Its most prominent feature is a large stucco mask dedicated to Itzamná, creator and benefactor deity of the Maya civilization. It is believed that Kabul was part of a ceremonial complex that delimited the main plaza, along with other structures such as Hun Pik Tok and Pap Hol Chac. Its location and symbolism reflect the ritual importance Izamal had as a sacred center in pre-Hispanic times.
