Saunas were rare among the Sámi in the late 19th century. As conventional housing became more widespread, saunas became more common. This sauna is a smoke sauna without a chimney. Hot water for washing was heated in the cooking hut. The sauna was transferred to the Open-Air Museum from the village of Köngäs in Kittilä; it was built in the early 1800s.
