The Big Ben bar on display operated in Lahti as part of the Go Inn restaurant from 1973 to 1984. Big Ben was one of the first English-style bars in Finland. People would drop by after work for a beer or spend the evening there. In addition to beer, Irish coffee was a popular drink. At first, Big Ben sold only bottled beer. The menu included fish and chips as well as French fries and peanuts.
Behind the bar stands bartender Eila Leivo, who worked at Big Ben. The photo was taken in 1974. Bar counter service had been prohibited in Finland since the 1930s. Customers sat at tables, where drinks were served by the staff, in an effort to prevent intoxication. Bar service and bar stools were allowed starting in June 1952, just before the Helsinki Olympics.
