Liquor jug from Restaurant Gambrini in Helsinki from the 1890s. In the 19th century, upper-class celebrations began with a smorgasbord that included dozens of cold dishes, shots of liquor and beer. The liquor shots were served from a liquor jug. Lavish buffets came back into fashion in hotels in the 1970s. The tradition continues today in generous hotel breakfasts.
