The hexagonal Nut Cabin was the Gold Museum's first exhibition building. The cabin was moved to its current location by volunteers in 1975. It was originally located in Varpupää (about 15 kilometers from Tankavaara), Sompio Strict Nature Reserve. Cabin was built there in 1949 and it served ore prospectors and other visitors. The Nut Cabin was built by O. V. Itkonen, who had in mind the exploitation of a nearby mica deposit. When the venture failed, the cabin was left to decay before finding a new life in Tankavaara.
