Predators in the boreal region
In Alaska, Kodiak bears are preparing for winter. They are omnivores, but in the autumn, they focus on eating salmon. Both the Red salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and the Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) migrate from the Pacific Ocean to their birth rivers. This is their final journey: after spawning, they die. The tired salmon are an easy catch for the bears. After devouring fish for weeks, it is time for the bears to retreat to hibernation.
Not all predators of the boreal regions hibernate. This Siberian tiger is about to catch a Sika Deer in the snowy Amur, Siberia. Males command a territory of hundreds of square kilometers and usually have a few females living within that area. This individual has been exceptionally dangerous after its death: the tiger fell on our chief taxidermist and ripped his ear during the building of this exhibition.
