The Moskkugaisi Mines

The Moskkugaisi Mines
Distance:
13.2 km
Estimated time:
5-6 hours
Follow the path through the Ankerlia Open Air Museum. Approx. 1 km from the car park at Ankerlia, you turn off and walk westwards up the mountainside. The old “Rallarveien” (migrant workers’ road) winds up towards the mountain Moskkugáisi.
The road forks after approx. 4.6 km. If you head southwards, you can walk approx. 11 km in the direction of Guolášjávri. You will meet the road that leads back down to Ankerlia.
The northwest option leads towards the Moskkugáisi mines. You can see the remnants of the mining activity after approx. 2 km, just before you reach lake Moskkujávri.
Worth knowing: Please be careful as there are no fences. Although the “Rallarveien” is a nice walk, it’s quite demanding with a rise of around 900 m. The roads continuing to the Moskkugáisi caves or Guolášjávri are service roads, which are easy to follow but have some demanding sections.
