Come and experience a village in the beautiful natural surroundings of Summassaari, home to numerous Stone Age dwelling sites.
For adults, the village of Summanen offers a chance to explore everyday life in the Stone Age. It feels as if the villagers have only stepped away for a moment.
The oldest settlement in the area dates back 9,000 years, and the most recent prehistoric find is a thousand-year-old iron spearhead. Several excavations have been carried out in the area, and reconstructions of dwellings have been created based on the discoveries. In the Stone Age Village, the Stone Age has been transformed into a life-size village where visitors can gain a vivid understanding of Stone Age lifestyles, housing, objects, and tools. The area includes the archaeologically researched Summanen Village, a trap and ancient trail, and Yläkylä, where Stone Age dwellings are presented. The newest separate site introduces an impact crater discovered in the nearby Lake Summasjärvi.
The Children’s Stone Age Village
The village buildings and tools are made to a child-scale size. In their own village, children can independently explore Stone Age life through play, from hunting to Stone Age housing. At the excavation area designed for children, they can learn about prehistoric research methods and try their luck as archaeologists. In the village, children can grind stones, decorate comb-ceramic vessels, fish with a slat fish trap, and hunt using traps. If the hunt is successful, they can make fire with a fire drill and prepare a meal using comb-ceramic vessels and tools.
Summer activities for the whole family
During the summer, the village hosts activity sessions where visitors learn Stone Age handicrafts using different materials. The themes change weekly and may include making bark bread, nets, fire, birch bark tar, bows, or rope using ancient methods. Participants also create a small Stone Age souvenir, for example from birch bark, stone, antler, or leather.
