In the shade of the rainforest
Rainforests are the most diverse ecosystem on Earth. There is plenty of sunshine, rainfall and nutrients to sustain millions of species living in different layers of the forests around the world. In the exhibition's tropical region, you can learn more about the organisms living in rainforests in Australia, Asia, Africa and South America.
This Eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) was caught in a rainforest in Rwanda by poachers in the 1960s. Dian Fossey, a famous primatologist and conservationist, nurtured it and another gorilla back to health. They were named Pucker and Coco. Both gorillas were sent to Cologne Zoo where they died nine years later. They ended up as specimens in Alexander Koenig Research Museum but were later sent to this museum as part of specimen exchange. The gorilla in the exhibition is Pucker.
