Baltic Sea
A springtime dive to the bottom of the Baltic Sea reveals its extraordinary nature. The Baltic Sea is the world’s largest basin of brackish water, which means that the water is a mixture of freshwater from rivers and salty sea water flowing in from the North Sea through the Danish straits.
There are both fresh water and marine species living in the sea. Few species have had time to adjust to the special conditions of the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea has only around 20 species of marine fish, and you can see a school of one of these in front of you. These are Baltic herring - Finland’s most important economic fish. People living along the Atlantic coast are probably surprised about the important role the herring plays in our economy. It is significantly smaller in size compared to the Atlantic herring.
You will find more species in the drawers of the cabinet labelled The Fish of Finland. Feel free to find out what’s in the other cabinets and boxes!
