Lakes are the heart of the Finnish summer scenery – and there is an abundance of them in Finland, especially in central parts of our country. The total number of lakes in Finland amounts to some 190 000. The majority of them are barren, small and shallow.
In Finland, where there are lakes, there are summer cottages. This is where Finns de-stress and enjoy spending time outdoors. On a bright summer night, the familiar high-pitched call of the Black-throated diver (Gavia arctica) carries to the shores of the lakes.
