Up in Lapland, above the Arctic Circle, the sun doesn’t rise at all in winter. In Finnish, this time is called “kaamos”. It’s not as dark a time as you would think at first. There is a beautiful blue twilight for several hours during the day and snow reflects the light from the moon. If it’s a clear sky, you might see Northern lights sparking up the sky.
Lapland is the home of Santa Claus and the indigenous people of Finland, The Sami. Traditionally, their livelihood consisted of reindeer herding, providing them with food, fur and transportation. Nowadays, only 10% of them get their living from reindeer herding. Reindeer is the half-domesticated offspring of the mountain reindeer. At the moment around 200 000 reindeer wander around the fells of Lapland.
