Diaphonisation is a technique used to make the bones and cartilage of animals visible in different colours. Bones are stained red, cartilage blue. The technique is particularly well suited to handling and examining small and fragile bones.
Private persons donate dead animals to the museum for use as natural history collection specimens. If the dead animal is pregnant, the unborn fetuses also become part of the museum's collections. Sometimes, as in this display featuring raccoon dog fetuses, they may also be included in the exhibition.
